And while you were gone, Kavanaugh happened just as you predicted. Such an ugly ordeal. Wasn’t there a rule at one time that justices had to be confirmed by 60 senators instead of 51?

I've forgotten what it's like to drive for fun. And now fall is here.

Not really for confirmation, per se, but f or much of the 20th and early 21st centuries, the Senate did have a procedural rule requiring 60 votes to end cloture. It was dropped for all debate on presidential appointments except the Supreme Court in 2013, and then for the Supreme Court last year.

Which party controlled the Senate when the rule was dropped?

Initially, the Democrats. Republicans then finished the job.

Was that the so-called “nuclear option?”

Yes, that’s what its been nicknamed.

Theoretically, the majority party has always had the option to force an end to cloture with a simple majority, the idea was that they just wouldn’t do it out of respect to Senate traditions, but that went away in ‘ 13.

I am making a real effort at understanding some of these machinations without swallowing the media’s talking points of a particular narrative, one way or another. At some level, it’s all just an ill-mannered chess game that the Rs seem to currently be winning. I am counting on Justice Kavanaugh and Chief Justice Roberts to put the reputation — and perception — of the SCOTUS first and play things accordingly.

May I ask you broadly, where you live and what is your profession? I am in the San Francisco Bay Area and I am a public school educator. 8th grade mathematics...

My (wife’s) dog has a growth on her neck that is passing the size of a baseball. Vets in the Bay Area want $1,400 to remove it, needle biopsy, et cetera. I need to find a rural vet who would just slice the thing off and sew up the hole and not take my mortgage payment in the process. I mean, I could see paying, like, $400, but $1400? This is not chemotherapy on a grandchild after all. Do you know anybody who might now somebody?

Drop me a line when it’s convenient. I had an uncle who made a career as a rep for RJR and I have some BSA experience. But I’d rather not go into that here.

That is a small world. All I’ll say about the latter is that they do genuinely o ffer some great programs for kids, but generally suck as an employer.
